By any reasonable measurement, this past month has been awful, if not disastrous.
I’ve had lots of inquiries but not a whole lot of sales.
I’ve had some great conversations with people, and have been privileged to be able to use my voice to speak on behalf of marginalized people.
I’ve spent lots of time searching for suppliers and customers, but haven’t had much luck with getting the second.
I’ve had supplier issues – including one that put me in the position of having to make a public apology and issue refunds.
I haven’t had a whole lot to reap this month.
Thankfully there are much smarter people than I who have been here before…
There are times when I really want to give up – this is a slow slog, with lots of work to be done and only so many hours in a day to do them. I’m spending my days, evenings, and even some late nights trying to build a business from the ground up.
But, I believe in this – this job, this company, this industry, and this country.
Despite the competition from companies that have sprung up to take advantage of COVID-19 who are undercutting my business with cheap products, despite the challenges of running a business solo, despite 60-hour work weeks to build and populate a website, despite all of that I still believe that I am the right person in the right industry at the right time.
So, despite the challenge posed to my finances by not reaping a whole lot this month, I’m buoyed by the seeds that have been planted.
Let me tell you about some of them.
Despite having to issue an apology and refunds, I found that all of our customers are gracious and caring people who are willing to give a local business a second chance.
I’ve been able to build relationships with new vendors and suppliers – all of whom are wonderful companies who make fantastic products. As a result, we are expanding our product lineup on a regular basis and have the ability to source unexpected products in new markets.
I’ve had some very exciting preliminary conversations about partnering with another local company to share space and resources.
I’ve been able to be a part of something very unexpected that has the potential to change this industry and make sure that the high standards to which I hold this company and myself become industry standards.
This has been a rough month, but I have deliveries to make this week. Those deliveries will hopefully lead to ongoing relationships and more conversations and plant the seeds for long-term success.
So, despite the fact my harvest has left lots to be desired, the seeds that have been planted this month give me hope and promise for the future.
I hope to be able to bring you updates on a regular basis – I’ll include some of our new products, but the purpose of these updates is more to tell you about what is happening behind the scenes and what we’re doing!
